Sir William has had a twin track career in the Private and Public Sectors over a period of in excess of 40 years. He was involved as a Non-Executive of the NHS from 1968 to 2008 and in parallel had an active business career, initially in the property industry and latterly with a broad portfolio of health, financial and property companies.

His career in the public sector has included roles as a Governor of the Royal Free Hospital in Grays Inn Road; Chairman of the NHS Appointments Commission (2001-2007); Chairman of the Commercial Advisory Board to the Department of Health (2003-2007); Member of the General Council of the King’s Fund (1995 to date).

His current public appointments include:
