The GMB Union has its origins in the Gas Industry founded by Will Thorne and Eleanor Marx at Becton Gas Works in 1889. Today the role of Gas in heating our homes and generating electricity is crucial to the UK national interest as it is to 25,000 GMB members employed in the Gas Industry. Over 80% of UK homes are heated by gas, almost half of our electricity comes from gas and gas is central to any fuel poverty. National Grid says that 'no credible scenario exists for hitting the UK's 2050 decarbonisation targets without continued reliance on gas.
