Dementia: Quality of Care
- 08:30 - 17:00
- The Royal National Hotel, London
Susanna Howard is the creator and artistic director of arts and literature charity Living Words www.livingwords.org.uk. Since 2007 Living Words have run arts residencies in care homes, working one to one with people experiencing a dementia. Every individual worked with receives their own Living Words Word Book containing their words about how they feel about life within the home. Staff are engaged in training, focussing on communication techniques within the home and how the books can aide communication, relationship and wellbeing. People do not need to be able to read or write to take part.
‘Every home needs to have a Living Words residency. How did we not know the emotions of our residents? The books of their words are now informing their care plans.’ Isobel Nyirenda, manager – Meadows House.
‘This is me! You listen, I don’t feel so mad’ Connie Archer, participant
‘You have worked with people that can’t usually join in groups… This is the best project we have ever done.’ Phyllis Etukondu, activity co-ordinator, Westmead care home.
