General Medical Council

The General Medical Council helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

We help doctors who qualified overseas to thrive in UK practice by running workshops called Welcome to UK practice (WtUKP). WtUKP uses interactive learning to build the doctor’s confidence in making the right choices when they face difficult ethical situations.

Recruiting and retaining good doctors is essential. From 2018 we’re making WtUKP available to thousands more doctors every year.
