Hugh joined the HEA in January 2016, bringing with him over 20 years as a senior lecturer in Higher Education, Hugh’s teaching background was in the discipline of sport and leisure, teaching across a range of subjects, and working across the university with a specific focus on improving the student experience, leading programmes on induction, personal tutoring and working collaboratively with the students union for the betterment of students.  Hugh’s experience also makes a significant contribution to the theme of employability, through the development of work experience and placements for his students as well as developing their emotional intelligence to support student transitions through university and into employment.  In Hugh’s new role at the HEA as the Academic Lead for Retention he is utilising his significant experience of working with students, supporting universities to engage in the issues that surround access, retention, attainment and progression.
