Ian Muldowney was appointed in September 2020 as the Chief Operating Officer for the Air Sector with accountability for through-life operational functional excellence, performance improvement and leveraging our technology & capability across our portfolio.
Ian's previous role was Engineering Director - Air and his career has covered roles throughout the life cycle in engineering, programme management and strategy in the UK/overseas (including KSA and South Africa). Ian joined BAE Systems in October 1995 as an apprentice in one of the predecessors to the Air Sector, Military Aircraft Division, after completing his A-Levels. His early roles included Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering and Strategy activities, including working on projects overseas, the Future Offensive Air System, survivability technologies,
defence industrial strategy, restricted access projects and Unmanned Systems/Autonomy.
That was followed by a series of engineering management and project delivery roles across areas mainly involving
signature management technologies and complex systems engineering, which led to Ian becoming the Head of Department - Low Observables and Survivability. In 2005 Ian won the Bea Beamont award and was also
awarded his MSc in Systems Engineering from the Royal Military College of Science (now the Defence Academy
In 2006 Ian became Engineering Manager – South Africa, covering Hawk and Gripen commitments in South Africa.
In 2007 he returned to the UK to lead the Mantis Demonstrator programme and be Assistant Chief Engineer.
Ian went to Saudi Arabia in 2010 to work on the KSA Typhoon programme (Salam), where he eventually became Vice President – Salam. Returning to the UK in 2016 he led the Military Air & Information activities into KSA and the Typhoon production operations. Ian then became the Air Sector Engineering Director in January 2018, leading c6500 engineers across the sector.
The COO Board is the heartbeat of the Air Sector, its’ focus is on performance, enabling operational delivery and
Advanced Projects and Technology outcomes. The COO role ensures that the Air Sector is working in unison to deliver our business and customer outcomes aligned to our strategy.
Outside of work Ian enjoy cooking, walking and is part of a coaching team for his sons youth rugby team. Previously he spent most of my time in Hockey in playing, coaching and administration roles. Ian is married with three children.
