Appointed Lead Nurse Safeguarding for South Birmingham PCT in 2005 and Head of Safeguarding Children for the citywide Birmingham Community Health services in 2010 – 2021, Clare was Nursing Times Nurse Leader of the Year and a finalist in the HSJ Clinical Leader of the Year in 2014, for safeguarding leadership and partnership work across Birmingham, particularly in relation to the development of the Birmingham MASH and concepts such as “Who’s in Charge” which she translated into film in 2019.
Trained at Barts hospital in 1977, and midwifery in Birmingham from 1982 - 2003 Clare specialised in transitional neonatal care, also practising as a Health Visitor 1984- 2005. As a Birmingham Health Visitor she achieved a West Midlands Innovation in Practice award for developing “Lifesteps”, an effective educationally accredited 12-month modular parent education and community development programme.
Clare has recently retired but continues work supporting safeguarding practice and recently worked again with Jo Garstang developing a new safeguarding campaign “Never Ever Shake a baby”.
